Turn Your Outdoor Pursuits into a By-Line in this Start-Up
By Roberta Beach Jacobson in Karpathos, Greece
Headquartered in Nashville, TN, Southern Adventure Magazine wants to work with both professional and aspiring writers. Editor and publisher Billy Plant III compares his new magazine’s content to that of National Geographic Adventure or Backpacker magazines.
However, the editorial will focus on outdoor pursuits in the 15 states that make up the southern geographic area as defined by Southern Adventure.
The audience for this magazine is quite broad. It will appeal to anybody who loves the outdoors, wants to stay active, and has an interest in enjoying the world around them.
So if you have a destination article that includes activities such as hiking, biking, climbing, surfing, or paddling, then this is the market for you.
Feature articles run from 1200 to 4000 words. If that sounds too long, consider their departments, where you’ll find shorter options. Trail Descriptions run 50 to 250 words and are specific to established trails and paths, etc. Destination articles run 250 to 1200 words. And the editor likes to include sidebars with these articles on where to stay, where to eat, and what rental equipment is available, so be prepared to supply that information too.
The pay rate will range…

LEAVE YOUR MONEY AT HOME!
If you’re still paying to travel, let us help…
What if a vacation wasn’t something you scrimped and saved for once a year. What if you could travel anywhere… anytime… and earn $100,000 or more while you’re at it.
Behind closed doors in a swank boutique hotel in San Antonio, an expert panel of savvy international travelers met for three days with one singular purpose in mind: to reveal every secret and technique they use to not just pay for their travels… but turn a profit on every trip.
You might not have been there in the room… but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Here’s everything they learned and more:

from $60 to $100 for a feature article. However, right now no payment will be made for destination and trail descriptions. Writers will get a copy of the magazine and a by-line.
The editor says they will consider reprints, so if you have an appropriate article lying around that’s already been published, this is an opportunity to have it earn you another by-line to add to your portfolio.
Keep in mind, too, that you’ll need to have photos available to illustrate your piece — for features and destinations, anyway. (If you’re not a photographer, you can always contact your local tourist board — often they have available pictures you can offer to a publication at no charge. Or, better yet, simply apply what you’re learning in our Wednesday Photo Tips and take some photos yourself!)
When submitting your article, the editor asks that you include up to three clips (if available) and send the submission via the U.S. Postal Service to:
Southern Adventure Magazine, Attn: Billy Plant III, 5543 Edmondson Pike #128 Nashville, TN 37211
Pay particular attention to this note from the Writer’s Guidelines: “No email submissions for any writing content please.”
You’ll find the complete Writer’s Guidelines here:

To return to the subject of photos: They are to play an important role in the magazine. The editors want eye-catching images that tell a story. They say they’ll discuss payment for photos, but warn that for now, anyway, it will be on the low end of the scale.
Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a place to break in, I’d give this some consideration.
If you wish to submit photographs, you can email them to the art director, David White, at: david@southernadventuremagazine.com. He asks that you keep the file size to under 2MB for each photograph. If that interferes with the quality of the image, you can send a print of your photo through the mail.

Take Your Place in the VIP Line
Competition for the world’s tourism dollars is fierce. So it’s no wonder that hotels… tour organizers… cruise lines… airlines… even local governments are willing to spend big bucks on travel writers — in hopes that they’ll have a positive experience and write about it favorably in a magazine, newspaper, newsletter, or online.
The more articles are written about a place, the rationale goes, the more tourists will go there. More tourists means more money… makes sense, really.
So how do you put yourself in line to be wined and dined and treated like royalty? Read more here: http://www.thetravelwriterslife.com/itj/website
