When I need a respite from the hectic energy of New York City, I head to Strand Book Store, located in the heart of Manhattan, on Broadway just south of Union Square. Boasting “18 Miles of Books,” Strand has been tantalizing book lovers with new, used, and rare books since 1927.
Designated a National Historical Landmark in 1960, the home built by Alexander Hamilton in 1802 has had an interesting history. The Grange was the country home of the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and originally sat on 32 acres in upper Manhattan. Named after his grandfather’s estate in Scotland, The Grange was Hamilton’s home for only two years. He was shot and killed in a duel with the Vice President Aaron Burr in 1804. The Grange remained in Hamilton’s family for 30 years. It later fell into foreclosure and was set for demolition when St. Luke’s Episcopal Church acquired the property and moved it to 287 Convent Avenue where it was used for services.
New York City is known for its bustling, fast-paced culture, but that’s not all the city offers. The Met Cloisters, located in northern Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, is a museum that provides solitude and silence to its visitors.
DANIEL is one of only a handful of New York restaurants that have been awarded a two-star Michelin rating. This sprawling French restaurant was recently given a complete overhaul, bringing it into the 21st century with a sleek, contemporary look that complements its innovative menu. As in all Daniel Boulud’s restaurants, the menu is heavily influenced by the seasons and combines contemporary French cuisine with American flavors. Overseen by Executive Chef Jean Francois Bruel, the kitchen offers a prix fixe menu as well as two seven-course tasting menus. Vegetarians are well catered to with their very own separate menu, and all menus are offered with optional wine pairings.
