Shealy’s Bar-B-Que

Shealy’s Bar-B-Que was established by Tom and Sara Shealy on Church Street in Leesville in 1969. Leesville is just over a half hour drive west of Columbia, South Carolina, and it is well worth the trip. Tom Shealy started barbecuing a couple of hogs a week back in the late 1950s to make some extra money. They sold their home and made barbecued pork from a stand until they took over a restaurant on Church Street in 1969 that had only been open for a year. It didn’t take long before Shealy’s Bar-B-Que became a local favorite. As time went on, Shealy’s reputation for great cooking at a reasonable price began to grow beyond the sleepy little farm town of Leesville — so much so that they have had their share of famous patrons, like the President of the United States, stopping by to sample their spread.

The island offers the best of Italian cuisine spiced up with North African and Arabic influences, due to the island’s historical location as an important hub along the Mediterranean trade route. Palermo, Sicily’s capital city, has its own unique cuisine and a thriving street food culture that easily ranks amongst the world’s largest. But first you have to know where to find it, as many of the offerings retain an air of secrecy and may require a little local knowledge to track down.

While dining on macadamia nut, pineapple, and banana pancakes for breakfast, a barbecued pork sandwich for lunch, or shrimp and mango curry for dinner, you’ll see why this is one of the locals’ favorite secret spots.

Lugo, Spain's City of Witches and Saints

Every year, from October 4th through 12th, the San Froilán Fiesta lights up Lugo, the capital city of Lugo province in Galicia, the northwest region of Spain. Famous bands perform onstage. Puppeteers and street musicians rim plazas or spill along side streets. Artisans sell handcrafts on blankets. A silver cowboy statue springs to life. A witch guards a major shop on a corner. Another witch peers out a window.

An Italian Dream in Todos Santos

Looking at the plate, I knew this restaurant in Todos Santos was doing something right. The beef was sliced across the grain, drizzled with olive oil, topped with freshly grated parmesan and finished with baby watercress. My wife always humors me, trying to steal a bite or two, but this time I had to fight her off to get my share …
