Bonnie is the Creative Director for Great Escape Publishing, a regular contributor to The Right Way to Travel, and creator of the Breakfast Stock Club, which helps folks to get up-and-running selling their photos in online stock photo agencies. She got her first travel articles and photos published after attending the Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop six summers ago in her hometown of Portland, Oregon. Before joining Great Escape Publishing, she taught English in the South of France and vagabonded through South America and South East Asia, dutifully testing all of the local foods and massage techniques.

Don't book a hotel room when you can rent an apartment! It tends to be cheaper, offers more room, and lets you live like a local, with a kitchen and living area. Recently, some friends and I found a cute apartment right in the middle of Paris with a balcony for half the price we would have paid for a hotel room in the city. I like to use Airbnb.com or Vrbo.com to book.
You CAN sell flower photos as stock. How do I know? Because this flower photo makes up about a third of my total stock photo income: It’s not a great photo, but it is unique. The fact that the flowers are isolated on white means that designers can “float” it into any design they please. […]
First impressions matter. And recent studies prove it takes just a split second to form one. What’s crazy is that when it comes to sensing levels of confidence, leadership, charisma, friendliness, and more… our split-second impressions are eerily accurate. But here’s the great part: In photos, we can project the things we’d like people to […]
Frostbite… parasites… house arrest… meningitis… and paraglider crashes. Those are just a few of the hazards of being a National Geographic photographer, according to an article that came out a few years back. In it, current and former Nat Geo shooters counted up all the terrible things that happened to them out in the field. Some […]
What do you think is the number one thing you need to learn to start selling your photos? Bonnie, here. My best-selling photos represent thousands of dollars of income. I’m not a great salesperson, so that’s money I never would have made if I had never learned how to make my photos look great in […]
I cringe a little when I run across some of the photos I used to think were good. Like these, which I posted online for the world to see: I’m chuckling to myself now as I show them to you. Every photographer I know does this. As your skills grow, your favorite photos are replaced […]
Bonnie here, again. One of the things I like to do when I’m playing with my photo skills is turn myself into a twin. It’s weird. I know. Probably comes from 38 years as an only child. But psychoanalysis aside, it’s one of my favorite art projects and a big reason I’m attracted to photography—because […]
On New Year’s Day, 2018, I woke up to bright sun and near silence in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was my first day living there, and the streets below were deserted, the stores shuttered. (A very inaccurate picture of what would become a constant din of noise, crowds, and commotion in the coming days). It […]
That’s it, I’m moving to France! Sigh—not really. I do love Oregon, after all… But after scouting for an upcoming workshop during the lavender bloom in Provence, I can’t wait to go back. The smells. The sounds. The scenic drives and the food… you can never get enough French food!! (Note: Look for us to announce […]
