The possibilities for making money with your travel writing and photography are endless. Especially when you combine them and find success in both. Reader Caroline Maryan, who lives half of the year in Seoul, South Korea, wrote in to tell me that not only has she found success getting her photos up in stock sites, printed on magazine covers, and published alongside her travel articles, but that all of those successes have led to a different kind of opportunity… Here’s what she said: “I thought I’d be going one way (pure stock photography or pure travel writing), and I’ve gone another, in a sense. “This fall, I’m going to teach a ‘Camera Mechanics’ class in Seoul. I’ve also been asked to speak to the British Association, here, about how to take better photos. And, I’m participating in an exhibition of emerging photographers in Seoul. On top of that, I’ve been asked to be the photo editor of an English-language magazine in Seoul. My photos have been on their cover for the past year. I’ve written articles for them in the past year, too. “In so many ways, it’s the International Living story… reinventing yourself overseas… but with a huge amount of help from Great Escape Publishing!!! I now have friends I would never have made. And my self-confidence has soared! I used to be ‘so-and-so’s mother.’ Now, when people (who I often don’t even know, truly!) see me without my camera slung around my neck, they come up and ask where my camera is!!! “I feel 25 years younger than I am, at the least. What a gift you have given me!!!” If you start where you are — right now — how far would you get by this time next year? Once you start really going for that dream, there’s no telling where you’ll end up. Maybe you’ll have photos published on magazine covers… or selling in stock photo agencies. Maybe you’ll publish your first travel article or take a 5-star press trip… or maybe you’ll do it all!
